What type of oil should I use? We recommend cold-pressed vegetable oil. Using a vegetable oil will avoid potential problems with nut oils. The oil will be absorbed into your baby’s body so we suggest using food oils and not a petroleum product.
How long should I massage my child? The massage with your baby or child should last as long as it is effective and pleasurable for both of you. This may be as little as a few minutes, which can be very effective, and as long as a half hour or more.
What kind of setting is best to massage in? Try to set up a quiet and welcoming space for your massage. Be sure your baby or child is warm and comfortable, and that you are as comfortable as possible. For example, you will want to think about back support and possibly lean against a sofa or wall.
How old should the baby be? Birth through to the teen years! The principles of respect and asking permission apply throughout all these years. It is a great way to stay ‘in touch’ with your growing children, and is never too late to start. For siblings, the massage may be a good way to overcome rivalry and provide another way to provide some focused attention between the family members.
What should be my intention in Massaging? Although massage has proven therapeutic benefits we suggest your ‘intent’ is simply to be with your child during massage time. MASSAGE IS DONE WITH YOUR BABY AND NOT DONE TO YOUR BABY. Try to listen with your hands, and with your heart, as you share this one-on-one time together. The intention will be to enjoy the special experience without having expectations or a specific goal in mind.
Can Dad’s do this? Certainly! Dad’s involvement is a wonderful way to demonstrate their love and support. The Father’s way of relating to the child may be different from Mom’s and should be respected.
How will I know how my baby feels during the massage? Observe your child’s body language, facial expressions, movements and sounds or words she makes. You will probably recognize the cues that tell you the baby is enjoying the massage time and when she needs a change or pause in activity.
Any hints as I start the massage? After preparing the space, take a pause to relax yourself. Keep it simple and use whatever works for you. Some examples include taking several deep breaths, stretching, and rolling your shoulders.
Ask your child’s permission to start the massage as you warm the oil in your hands.
Play music, sing and give yourself permission to have fun! :)
